Park-edge density

Parkrand

Housing that frames the edge of a park while keeping long views, shared outdoor space, and a clear relationship to the landscape.

Overview

Parkrand sits on the edge of Eendrachtspark in Amsterdam’s Geuzenveld district. Instead of treating housing and open space as separate problems, the project uses the building itself to define the park edge. Its long block creates a clear urban boundary while keeping large openings through the volume, so views and movement remain part of the design.

Why it matters

It treats the park edge as a design problem in its own right. The building creates a clear urban boundary without becoming a closed wall. Large openings in the block preserve views and bring light and air into the composition, showing how density can frame open space rather than consume it. Its value is urban as much as architectural: it helps define the relationship between housing, public space, and landscape.
